TIER 4 - COMBATIVE HANDGUN
THE DSI (TIER 4) COMBATIVE HANDGUN PROGRAM is designed for serious students of personal protection, imparting the skills and attitude needed to decisively win the fight of your life. This course goes well above and well beyond any NRA type or state-mandated training.
WHAT you will learn: New gun owners will learn to safely and effectively handle and shoot a handgun under realistic conditions, apply the combative skills needed to dominate a lethal force confrontation, use immediate lifesaving medical care, and appreciate the legal ramifications of fighting to save innocent life. Veteran shooters can refresh and tune up existing skills, learn new techniques and concepts, and fill any gaps in their skills set, as well as pave the way for more advanced training.
Course content starts with basics like wearing your equipment correctly, grip and stance, and how to quickly and effectively present (draw) your handgun, achieve hits with practical combat accuracy. You will master reloads and malfunction clearance, maneuver (moving with purpose and thought) off the line of attack, and safely to cover. You will learn (where the facilities permit) how to read doors (know how they open by visual and tactile references), how to approach, test, and different techniques for making entry. You will learn to become comfortable shooting in both low or no light conditions, issue verbal commands, shoot/no-shoot decision making, how to de-escalate, and how to treat life-threatening injuries in the immediate aftermath of a fight.
HOW you will be trained: Our Combative Handgun Program goes well beyond typical, administrative state licensing courses and basic NRA-type training. We do this with a unique training experience and support system presented by DSI certified Distributed Security Advisors (DSAs) who give you personal attention and help you reach your full potential - before, during, and after your initial range training.
DSI's training methodology is delivered in three phases: pre-course information and guidance, intensive on-range gun-handling skills and drills, and a continual post-course support system delivered by your DSA.
Pre-course materials, including curricula, equipment lists, instructional drills and videos, manuals, photos, fully customizable Individual Daily Training Plans. All supporting materials, courses, and quizzes are provided prior to your course through our online training portal (the DSI Defense Academy). More importantly, your DSA will be available to answer your questions during his Weekly Live Pre-Course Q&A Briefs.
Range Training is fast-paced, dynamic, hands-on, and intensive. You will learn practical gun-handling skills by practicing them under the watchful eye of your DSA(s). Because all of the "book learning" was done prior to your course, these 16 hours of range training are devoted entirely to learning and practicing physical skills and techniques.
- Post-course, through your continued enrollment in the Defense Academy, you will have continued access to regularly updated training materials, including curricula, equipment lists, instructional drills and videos, manuals, and photos. You will be networked with your local classmates, other local DSI Graduates, and/or your local distributed security network through your own Private Training Group in the Defense Academy, and you will be the first to receive ongoing challenging training opportunities. Most importantly, your DSA hosts thrice-weekly 30-minute Online Dry Practice Sessions where they will answer all of your self-training questions, help you sharpen your skills, and achieve your training goals between classes by using your fully customizable Daily Training Plan and your DSI Training Notebook.
The Combative Handgun Program is organized in four modules, briefly described below, which offer great flexibility in scheduling. For instance, you can complete the 16-hour range training in two consecutive 8-hour days, or you can take one 4-hour module at a time over a period of one or more weeks, or you can take hourly courses weekly for 16 weeks as your time permits (where available).
We highly recommend the latter formats, as it allows you to rest, assimilate, and practice skills between range sessions, and it will allow you to integrate your online pre-course work into more manageable chunks concurrent with your training.
Module-1 - Handgun BASICS includes the correct wearing of your equipment for your choice of EDC (Every Day Carry), begins ingraining safety habits and teaches you how to quickly establish a proper grip on your handgun so you can present (draw) confidently knowing you can control your handgun's recoil and deliver shots quickly and accurately. You will learn the proper technique for devistating practical combat accuracy using intuitive fire at immediate problem ranges (0 to 7-yards). You will learn how to deal with the most common reload you will be facing in a gunfight. You will be taught how to prevent and clear (fix) the most common type of malfunction most shooters struggle with. And you will learn how to quickly and safely maneuver to cover, and just as importantly, how to use your cover correctly (yes, there are correct ways to use cover).
Module-2 - Handgun SKILL BUILDER begins by testing the combative skills learned in Module-1, and then transforms your combative intuitive fire into highly effective combative sighted fire to deal with problems well beyond 5 to 7-yards. You will be given more reload options you can use prior to running your gun dry so you can keep fighting if you need to. You will learn how to safely and quickly present your handgun from concealment while you maneuver off the line of attack and to cover during a fight. You will learn how to quickly fix a lesser common malfunction that will tie up most untrained shooters. You will start shooting in low-light conditions, you will start learning how to apply tourniquets, pack wounds, and apply pressure dressings to control life-threatening bleeding that kills most people before the first responders can arrive to ply their skills, and you will learn how to read, approach, and correctly open doors appropriate to the situation at hand.
Module-3 - Handgun SKILL MASTERY tests all combative skills from the previous two modules and introduces you to more reloading options, and how to respond to and then interrupt your adversary's decision making process (Boyd's OODA Loop). You will start learning how to deal with multiple adversaries. You will learn how to ID and address targets in no-light conditions with a tactical light. You will be taught how to deal with open chest wounds and manage airways in order to save lives before EMS can show up and take over. You will develop speed and practical accuracy under all conditions, and you will learn (where available) how to stack the odds in your favor prior to making entry into a room, and then capitalizing on your advantage once you make entry. At the end of this course, you will have learned almost all of the basic gun-handling techniques needed to protect yourself in a lethal force environment and save innocent lives in the aftermath.
Module-4 - Handgun COMBATIVES: The course starts with the testing of the combative skills learned through modules 1-3 and then introduces engagement of close-contact targets and improvised shooting positions. You will shoot under time pressure at ranges from contact to 10 yards and more. You will integrate all combative skills under time and performance pressure, with ample trigger time under various lighting conditions. This final module will put a sharp edge on your ability to shoot quickly and accurately giving you confidence in your ability to not just survive but thrive - in and after a lethal force encounter. The course concludes with the Tier 4 Handgun Skills Test* which they can apply towards a Graduate Certificate. Rest assured, if you follow our advice and training you will find the test challenging yet achievable.
*Completing the Tier 4 series (or having demonstrated an acceptable equivalent level of competencies) allows you to take the DSI Tier 4 Handgun Skills Test (T4-HST). Students who pass the T4-HST with 80% or better, will earn a Certificate of Completion and when used in conjunction with the Certificate of Completion from their DSI online curricula students will earn the DSI Graduate Certificate.
